Situated on the north eastern fringe of Torquay, Babbacombe Beach is an unspoilt cove with a wealth of character and a rich history of smuggling, fishing, murder and intrigue. Long before the Victorians made Torquay a fashionable leisure resort with it’s promenades, ‘oompah’ bands and patent bathing machines, Babbacombe Beach was providing an income for generations of local fisherman from vast shoals of herrings and pilchards. With the decline of the traditional fishing industry Babbacombe Beach has necessarily moved with the times to focus on leisure and water sports whilst remaining aloof from the ‘kiss-me-quick’ hat culture and Punch and Judy shows that enveloped many British seaside resorts. Today, Babbacombe Beach remains the unspoilt jewel in the crown of the ‘English Riviera’. |
